FASTING EXAMPLES (2): DANIEL’S FAST

2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. 3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

We are going to see several fasting examples in the Bible with the view of learning how fasting works and how to engage it. We are looking at Daniel’s fast today. The first thing about Daniel’s fast is that he purposed in his heart to walk in holiness. Until you are all out to walk in holiness taking advantage of the nature of righteousness you already possess in HaMashiach (Christ), you are not ready for fasting. You must decide to do away with any form of sin and unrighteousness before you make the decision to fast. With that decision, the fasting will help you permanent it by helping you mortify the flesh, setting your spirit free as it were to drive hard after Adonai. That was the starting point of the life of Daniel (Dan.1:8).

Daniel’s fast is a partial fast in which meat, wine, and other rich foods are avoided in favour of vegetables and water for typically three weeks in order to be more sensitive to God. Daniel experimented this fast for 10 days in which afterwards “at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat” (Daniel 1.15). Then, after the experiment, Daniel was on this diet for three years of his education in Babylon. So in Daniel’s fast, you eat only vegetables and water for at least three weeks. It is important to know that Daniel’s fast is only an option when you are doing a major fast. A major fast is a fast of from 21 days to 40 days and upwards. Daniel was on that kind of diet for three years. No wonder at the end of their education, “in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.” (Daniel 1:20). This type of diet imparts on your mentality so much.

Another major factor in Daniel’s fast is that it was a fast that was laced with prayers, minimum three sessions daily. It is a fast that you are highly “prayerised”. Because it is not a total fast, you have plenty of energy to pray. You cannot be doing Daniel’s fast and not be having a minimum of three prayer sessions daily. In fact, to have strength to go about your duties and pray is the reason that it is not a total fast. Daniel was working for the king and has to attend to his duties, so he had to eat something to have some energy to work. This is the reason it is not a total fast, so plan to pray at least three times daily all through your fasting season. As you focus, you shall come to visions and revelations of the Lord as was the case with Daniel. What a sweet communion.

REMEMBER: Daniel’s fast is a fast where you take vegetables and water only for a minimum of 21 days.

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word to me today. I ask for the grace to be focused and disciplined to go through this kind of fast this year in the name of Yahushua HaMashiach Amen!

PROPHETIC RELEASE: As you start this kind of fast, I decree it shall impart on your mentality and eternity in the name of Yahushua HaMashiach Amen!
