CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (10): BEARS ALL THINGS

Love bears up under anything and everything that comes …

1 Corinthians 13:6 (AMPC)

The more I try to comprehend this love, the more I am amazed and feel like I have not even started at all. The acid test of spirituality is walking in the Yahweh-kind of love. The Yahweh-kind of love bears up under anything and everything that comes. The Greek word rendered bears up or beareth (KJV) is stego. It means to cover and is related to the word indicating a roof, or a covering that offers protection from the elements. In his commentary, W. E. Vine explains that this covering either supports what is placed upon it, or covers what is placed underneath it. Love acts in both ways in bearing all things. The implications of this is awe-striking.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (9): DOES NOT REJOICE AT INJUSTICE OR UNRIGHTEOUSNESS

It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail.
I Corinthians 13:6 (AMP)

How our lives and relationships will be transformed if we can just start manifesting the Yahweh-kind of love. This love does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness. What does it mean to not rejoice in iniquity? The word “rejoiceth” in the phrase “rejoiceth not in iniquity” according to KJV is translated from the Greek word chairō, which means to rejoice, to be glad, to be delighted or pleased. Think about when you are delighted in something. You may dwell on it or talk about it—maybe you even make a big deal about it or magnify it. You rejoice in it, and it makes you glad. When we manifest the love of Yahweh, we absolutely don’t rejoice in unrighteousness. We assuredly don’t take pleasure in wrongdoing. And we most certainly don’t gloat over other men’s sins nor show gladness when others do wrong or fail.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (8): IS NOT TOUCHY, EASILY ANGERED OR RESENTFUL

… it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].
I Corinthians 13:5 (AMP)

Yahweh-kind of love is not touchy. There are people who are touchy or quick-tempered; they’re so sensitive, you have to be careful the way you talk to them, lest they be offended. That’s not the way of love. Love is not easily offended. To be touchy means to be irritable, quick-tempered, prickly or easily upset. The Greek word ‘Logizomai’ refers to “keeping a mental record” or “taking into account.”1 It is an accounting term. It accounts for the list of wrongs and possesses the ability to accurately look back and pull up any specific offence. As any accountant knows, if you keep track of someone’s payments or debts, it is because you have every intention of drawing their attention back to those financial obligations at some point in the future. The same is true in this case. Those who keep a record of offences (real or perceived) done to them, the intent is to bring those back up at some point in the future and hold that person responsible for their actions. This love does not do so.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (7): IS NOT SELF-SEEKING

… Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; …
I Corinthians 13:5 (AMP)

The highest revival any person can experience in this side of eternity is the revival of walking in the Yahweh-kind of love. It will so transform you to the amazement of even yourself. You don’t know what true spirituality means until the fruit of love is developed and grows in your life. The Yahweh-kind of love according to Pa Kenneth Hagin has not been to the divorce court and can never go there because it cannot fail. Look at our text again, this Yahweh-kind of love does not insist on its own rights or its own way. Wow! ‘This is my right and I must have it’ is never the way of this supernatural love. ‘If it is not my way then there is no way’ attitude is not seen in this Yahweh-kind of love.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (6): IS NOT RUDE

… it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. …
I Corinthians 13:5 (AMP)

To be rude is to be socially incorrect in behaviour. It is of a person, lacking in refinement or grace. It is lacking civility or good manners. The Greek work is aschemoneo meaning to be (act) unbecoming, exactly how Amplified puts it. The place our spirituality is easily known and tested is in the use of words. So many prayerful people are very rude. They can easily insult the people in their lives and that does not bother them. The Yahweh-kind of love is not rude. If you get the use of your tongue right, then you are a perfect person. James 3:1-12 explained this issue very succinctly. It is a long reading, but it is worth the time. “1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us? and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature? and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame? it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father? and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.”

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (5): IS NOT INFLATED WITH PRIDE

… love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.5 It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); …
I Corinthians 13:4-5 (AMP)

The very word translated “pride” is the Greek word ‘phusioo’ meaning to “puff up” or “blow up.” The English idiom “having a big head” communicates the same idea. To be puffed up is to have an inflated opinion of oneself. According to William Penn, the founder of the Colony of Pennsylvania, “A proud man then is a kind of glutton upon himself; for he is never satisfied with loving and admiring himself; whilst nothing else, with him, is worthy either of love or care” (from No Cross, No Crown, chapter XII). In pride we become the objects of our own love; in humility we learn to love others.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (4): IS NOT BOASTFUL

… love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, …
I Corinthians 13:4 (AMP)

Love is not boastful. To be boastful is to take delight in our own accomplishments or positions and flaunt the fact that other people have not accomplished them. This second part is crucial, there is nothing wrong with recognising who we are and what we have done. We’re not asking people to pretend they are something they are not, or pretend they have not accomplished what they have accomplished. We’re talking about flaunting that in the face of those who have not accomplished that and regarding them as inferior because of it. In fact that is the key, its not about your accomplishments, its about seeing those accomplishments as making you more important than everyone else. Being boastful is arrogating to yourself the glory of your accomplishments. It is thinking and talking as though it was all by your power that you are where you are and have accomplished what you have accomplished. Love is not boastful. Yahweh-kind of love recognises that there is nothing in anyone apart from Yahweh. The Yahweh-kind of Love recognises that it is all by the power and help of the Lord that anything has been accomplished at all.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (3): IS NOT ENVIOUS

…love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, …
I Corinthians 13:4 (AMP)

First Corinthians 13 offers one of the Bible’s richest expositions regarding love. Verse 4 notes that love “does not envy.” So, selfish jealousy is at odds with Yahweh’s type of love. Some Bible versions rendered ‘love is never envious’ in our text as ‘it is not envious’ (NET), ‘it does not envy’ (NIV), ‘love does not envy’ (NKJV), ‘is not jealous’ (ERV), ‘charity envieth not’ (KJV), etc. The Greek word translated “envy” is ‘zeloo’ which means “to burn with zeal, to have warmth of feeling for or against, to affect, covet (earnestly), (have) desire, (move with) envy, be jealous over, (be) zealous(-ly affect).” Literally, the sense is “to be heated or to boil over with envy, hatred, or anger.” In the context of 1 Corinthians 13, the idea is that love does not focus on personal desires. It is not eager to increase possessions. Yahweh’s type of love is selfless, not selfish. Envy is when you want what someone else has and you resent them for having it. Spurgeon says it this way “There is a spirit, resident in the natural man, the human nature of man, which is always inclined toward hate and envy, always wanting to get somewhat from other men, and always grieved if other men seem to be or to have more than the person himself has.”

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (2): IS KIND

… love is kind and thoughtful, …
I Corinthians 13:4 (AMP)

The second attribute of the Yahweh-kind of love is kindness. What is it to be kind? The phrase “is kind” in I Corinthians 13:4 is the Greek word chrēsteuomai, from the root word chrēstos, which E. W. Bullinger’s Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament defines as “good, gentle, benevolent…actively beneficent in spite of ingratitude.” Both “benevolent” and “beneficent” describe someone who does good. To be kind is to do good unto others, even if they don’t show appreciation for our gestures. The Yahweh-kind of love is always the answer to the odds of human demeanour. That definition of chresteuomai says ‘actively beneficent in spite of ingratitude’.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (1): ENDURES LONG

Love endures with patience and serenity; …
I Corinthians 13:4 [AMP]

Beginning from this day, we shall be discussing the characteristics of the Yahweh-kind of love. These are the manifestations of the Yahweh-kind of love in the Believer. Love is the first fruit of the recreated human spirit. This is because every other fruit is an overflow of love. As wonderful as the gifts of the Spirit are, the Bible teaches that it’s the fruit of the spirit – “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, [and] temperance” (Galatians 5:22-23) – that indicate a person is walking in the spirit and not the flesh. If you want to know whether you’re a spiritual person or not, look to see if you are walking in love. You simply can’t walk in the spirit or be a spiritual person without being ruled by love. The reason I single out love is because it is the foundation upon which all the other fruit rest. The others flow out of love. To find out just how important love is in the economy of Yahweh, read the first few verses of 1 Corinthians 13, “1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge? and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” (verses 1-3).
