CHARACTERISTICS OF YAHWEH’S KIND OF LOVE (3): IS NOT ENVIOUS
…love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, …
I Corinthians 13:4 (AMP)
First Corinthians 13 offers one of the Bible’s richest expositions regarding love. Verse 4 notes that love “does not envy.” So, selfish jealousy is at odds with Yahweh’s type of love. Some Bible versions rendered ‘love is never envious’ in our text as ‘it is not envious’ (NET), ‘it does not envy’ (NIV), ‘love does not envy’ (NKJV), ‘is not jealous’ (ERV), ‘charity envieth not’ (KJV), etc. The Greek word translated “envy” is ‘zeloo’ which means “to burn with zeal, to have warmth of feeling for or against, to affect, covet (earnestly), (have) desire, (move with) envy, be jealous over, (be) zealous(-ly affect).” Literally, the sense is “to be heated or to boil over with envy, hatred, or anger.” In the context of 1 Corinthians 13, the idea is that love does not focus on personal desires. It is not eager to increase possessions. Yahweh’s type of love is selfless, not selfish. Envy is when you want what someone else has and you resent them for having it. Spurgeon says it this way “There is a spirit, resident in the natural man, the human nature of man, which is always inclined toward hate and envy, always wanting to get somewhat from other men, and always grieved if other men seem to be or to have more than the person himself has.”
Envy is the opposite of God’s command not to covet (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21). “Love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). The one who truly loves will be in conformity to the Ten Commandments, and envy will be excluded. In contrast to God’s command, the Corinthian believers were ranking some spiritual gifts as more important than others and envying those who had the “best” gifts. In chapter 12, Paul points out that the different gifts are meant to serve one another and build up the church. No one person has all the gifts, but each child of God has at least one, and love demands that each gift be used to serve others rather than self.
“Envy rots the bones” (Proverbs 14:30). This means that envy is more deadly than the most lethal disease or virus. It corrupts the bones. New Living Translation (NLT) says it this way ‘…jealousy is like cancer in the bones’. When we crave what someone else has rather than being grateful for what Yahweh has given, we hurt ourselves. Instead of envying others, we are called to love them. True love—Yahweh’s love—rejoices when others are blessed. There is no room for envy. Yahweh-kind of Love does not seek to benefit itself and it is content with what it has, because its focus is on meeting the needs of the loved one and this is who you are as a born again person. May every trace of envy and jealousy die now and permanently in your life in the name of Yahushua HaMashiach Amen!
REMEMBER: The Yahweh-kind of Love does not boil over with envy, hatred or anger.
CONFESSION: I am born again by the Word of Yahweh. The love of Yahweh is shed abroad in my spirit and I am reflecting the glory of that nature to my world today. I am a lover and do not boil over with envy. As I come in contact with people today, the love of Yahweh in my spirit will ooze out to bless their lives. Hallelujah!
PROPHETIC RELEASE: I release upon you today the grace to walk in this Yahweh-kind of love and to reap the harvests of supernatural living where everything answers to you at your instance in the name of Yahushua HaMashiach Amen!
